A remarkable chain of events brought cork man Mr. Donal O’Doherty home both in the physical sense and in the sense of his beloved martial art of Taekwon-Do. Mr. O’Doherty recently returned to Cork after living in Australia for nine years. He has since set up his own Taekwon-Do school in Cork City recognised by the International Taekwon-Do federation (ITF) which is the world wide governing body headed by General Choi Hong Hi, the founder of the Korean art.
Mr. O’Doherty started his martial arts training in Judo in 1973, before moving to Taekwon-Do in 1975 under the tutelage of Adian Walsh. After several years of training, during which he enjoyed National Championship success, Mr. O’Doherty turned his attention to a wider variety of sports including athletics.
Mr. O’Doherty’s enthusiasm for Taekwon-Do extends to his two sons Jason and Dean who also practice the art. He sees Taekwon-Do as an activity that is beneficial for everyone as he considers it to be a ‘multidisciplinary art, for besides developing all-round physical fitness and self defence, it develops a person in the area of discipline, self confidence, respect for oneself and others’. His ambition is to expand and develop the Taekwon-Do school as he sees it making a great contribution to the community in years to come.
